Our History
Sport Automotive's story began in 1950, when Robert Fulton Hicks opened Hicks Chevrolet on Georgia Avenue in Washington, D.C. In 1952, his son-in-law, George Fogarty, took over the business after beginning his career with General Motors. Inspired by California's growing suburban auto malls, George relocated the dealership to Silver Spring in 1968, renamed it Sport, and helped establish the Montgomery Auto Sales Park.
George expanded the business into a successful dealership group stretching from Buffalo, New York, to Orlando, Florida. His son, Robert Hicks Fogarty Sr., joined the organization after college, became President in 1984, and assumed ownership in 1989. Under his leadership, Sport Automotive added several franchises, including Sport Honda in 1995, while continuing to grow its reputation for customer service.
In 2020, Robert Fogarty Sr. retired and transferred ownership to his sons, Robert Jr. and Gibbs. They also acquired Capitol Cadillac and relocated it to Automobile Boulevard alongside the Chevrolet dealership. Today, the brothers operate Chevrolet, Cadillac, and Honda dealerships while actively supporting local schools, charities, youth organizations, and community programs throughout the Silver Spring area.
