A Family Automotive Legacy in Silver Spring
Our auto group has been part of the Washington, D.C., area automotive community for more than 75 years. What began with one Chevrolet dealership in Northwest D.C. in 1950 has grown into a family-owned automotive organization.
Our story starts with Robert Fulton Hicks, who founded Hicks Chevrolet in 1950 at 5929 Georgia Avenue in Northwest D.C. Robert, known as “Bob,” had begun his career with General Motors, establishing an early connection to the automotive industry that would become a family tradition. In 1952, he passed the business to his son-in-law, George Fogarty, who also began his career with General Motors.
George eventually had a vision for where the automotive business was headed. During a dealer trip to California, he saw the emerging concept of dealerships moving from urban centers into suburban communities and larger automotive parks.
He brought that idea back to the Washington, D.C., area and moved the Chevrolet dealership to Silver Spring in 1968, adopting the Sport name that remains part of our identity today. Our Chevrolet dealership has remained at the heart of the automotive community he helped create, connecting Sport Automotive's history to Silver Spring and Montgomery County.
Growing into a Family-Owned Automotive Group
After moving to Silver Spring, George Fogarty continued to grow the business. Over the years, he became at least a partial owner of as many as 17 dealerships stretching from Buffalo, New York, to Orlando, Florida.
His son, Robert Hicks Fogarty Sr., followed the family path into the automotive industry. After college, Robert Sr. began working at one of the family's dealerships in Orlando before returning to the Washington, D.C., area to work alongside his father.
In 1984, Robert Sr. became President of the Sport organization. Following his father's passing in 1989, he assumed full ownership and continued building the family business. Over the years, the Sport organization expanded and evolved, representing a variety of brands.
In 2020, after decades in the automotive industry, Robert Fogarty Sr. retired and sold the dealerships to his sons, Robert Jr. and Gibbs. The transition marked another chapter in a family business that had already passed through multiple generations. Today, Robert and Gibbs continue to own and operate various dealerships in Silver Spring.
Serving Today's Drivers
That history has shaped more than just where Sport Automotive came from. It continues to influence how we serve drivers today. While the automotive industry has changed significantly since 1950, our commitment to serving the local community has remained at the center of the business.
Today, Sport Chevrolet gives drivers access to a wide selection of new Chevrolet vehicles and quality used cars, trucks and SUVs. Our team can also help you find the right way to pay for your vehicle with automotive financing options designed around different budgets and buying situations.
Our relationship with customers doesn't end when you drive off the lot. Our Chevrolet service center provides ongoing maintenance and repairs to help keep your Chevrolet running the way it should. From routine service and maintenance to more involved repairs, our team is here to support you throughout your vehicle's ownership.

More Than a Dealership: Part of the Community
Being a local automotive business means being part of the community around us. Throughout our history, we have supported local schools, organizations, charities and community events through donations and involvement.
Our community partnerships have included Rosemary Hills School, Paint Branch, The Lilabean Foundation, The Laughlin Family Foundation, Winners Lacrosse, The Tewaaraton Award, Corrigan Sports, Habitat for Humanity, the Corvette Club of America, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Children's Hospital, and the Greater Washington Region Clean Cities Coalition, among many others.
That involvement reflects an important part of the Sport Automotive story: our relationship with the community goes beyond selling and servicing vehicles.
